This collection is an index to Auschwitz death certificates dating between July 29, 1941 and December 31, 1943. Information listed includes name, birth date, death date, birthplace, residence, and religion. The information originates from the Auschwitz Sterbebücher (Death Books) covering the aforementioned dates.<br><br>This collection covers nearly 65,000 individuals, the majority of which were either Roman Catholic or Jewish. Please note, only individuals who were registered prisoners in the camp were recorded in the death certificate books. According to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the estimated number of victims who perished in Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945 is between 1.1 million and 1.5 million people. The majority of these victims were killed immediately upon arrival, and were never officially registered in the German record books. Thus, their deaths were not recorded. This collection provides information on just a small percentage of the deaths that occurred at Auschwitz.

Roman Franciszek Rybarski was a Polish Economist and Politician. He worked in the Polish underground during World War II which led to his arrest by the Nazi German Authorities. Rybarski was eventually sent to Auschwitz where he organized a resistance movement within the camp that led to his execution in 1942.
